I definitely agree with you that The Hunger Games is inappropriate reading material for children. However as you said, Barbie doesn’t have the greatest track record… And it’s all about the bottom line. However as in all things, I feel that it is ultimately the parents job to be aware of what they are exposing their children to. Apparently there is already an underage fan base for The Hunger Games, which doesn’t speak well to the turn that “parenting” has taken in our nation. Another option that I see happening as well is that a lot of fans of the books will purchase the Barbie Doll as a collectors item.

I agree that this is a collectors doll. There are many, many adults who collect Barbies and I am sure this one will sell quite well. Not all toys are for children!

The only reason that Barbie doesn’t have a good track record is because some parents cannot differentiate between a “child’s” Barbie doll and a “collector’s” Barbie doll. It’s quite obvious that this is a collectors doll (just like the Harley Davidson Barbie, the Scarlett o’Hara Barbie, etc…). If you want your 6 year old to play with a $28 piece of plastic that normally costs about $13, then that’s your perogative. Besides, the meaning would be lost to a child that has never read the book.

I haven’t read the Hunger Games yet but I did collect Barbie dolls as a teen and still do occasionally. I’m pretty sure this is meant to be a collectors doll and not a toy to play with. Its probably directed at adults or teen girls who still enjoy Barbie dolls but they don’t play with them. If I had been a teen and loved the books, I probably would have gotten the doll.

LOVED “The Hunger Games” and as far as what’s appropriate for “young adults” I think it depends, I read Stephen King’s “The Stand” when I was 10. lol And as for the Barbie I think it is truly for the collector’s market and not something to be torn out to the box and played with.

I have been pushing The Hunger Game series on my 7th graders for several years now. I’m never really sure why people are so appalled by the violence of the book. It is a well-written book that truly makes the reader (even a 10 year old) think about the ethics of the game, and also helps them look at parallels in our own world. I also think that there are a great number of 10 year old who can handle this book. It depends on the child. I have students who read material appropriate for a 4th grader, and then I have students reading Jodi Picoult.

As for the doll, I see it as something more for the fan base. Those teens and adults who really like the movie. Or those adults who are fans who also have children at home who enjoy Barbies. I mean, there’s a Lego set for Dr. Who, but I highly doubt 7 year olds are big fans.

First, the hunger games are truly for teens the violence level is incredibly high. Second, please tell me if your teens are still playing with barbies.
I think the biggest problem I have with this is that Katniss is a real, strong female character. This is not what Mattel has done with their dolls. I don’t want an Uber-skinny, sexualized Katniss. She’s wonderful the way she is.Finnick).
