Barbie Baby Games Biography

I loved the Hunger Games Trilogy. As a thirty-something woman who read the books by Suzanne Collins in record time last year, I have to say that I am very anxiously awaiting the upcoming movie. The story is truly amazing, heartbreaking and fierce. That being said, I must also admit that I only learned after having read the first book that the series was in the Young Adult genre. That is to say, it is targeted to kids ages 12 and up. I remember thinking that the material was far too violent and mature for children in middle school. And maybe I am old fashioned, but I still believe that.

So when I heard that Mattel is planning to release a Katniss barbie doll (at a $28 price tag), you could have heard the sound of the record scratch that stopped me in my tracks from miles away.

Really Mattel? Is this some kind of joke?

Barbie dolls are typically geared toward little girls ages 6 and up. And while there is part of me that sort of wants to think they are giving girls the chance to see a strong female role model by introducing Katniss, I think they have it all wrong. Honestly, I don’t think children in elementary school need to be deciding what outfits their dolls need to wear for the Apocalypse.

Call me crazy.

Granted, Barbie doesn’t have the best record, but this just goes too far. The absolute tragedy of the Hunger Games story is that children are being forced into adult roles in order to survive. The adults are either powerless to stop it or the force behind the evil reality of that world. It seems eerily obvious to me that the Katniss Barbie would be creating this same dilemma for our actual children.  The subject matter for her character is too mature. Plain and simple.

And while it pains me to say anything negative about this epic adventure, it’s not for children. Like one commenter said in the above post, The Katniss Barbie seems like a purely District 1 product.

No photos of the Katniss Barbie doll have been released yet and the release date is not yet known.

Would you buy your daughter the Katniss Barbie doll?

I’m midway through the second book (only took me this long because the reserve list at the library is a mile long) and I too can’t wait for the movie. My 15 year old nephew had to read the book for school. I think 14 is an appropriate age for these books/movie. Our children need to read books like this to remember not all kids are as privlidged as we are. No, there aren’t kids fighting for their lives in post-apocolyptic societies but there are young kids in war torn countries being tossed a gun before they are out of grade school. There are kids who have to work rather than school to support their families. Shielding our teens from these facts does them no good.

As for the dolls, I don’t think they are necessarily marketed for little girls. Probably for the teens and old bags like us who they know are obsessed with the books (not that I personally would waste my money on the marketing materials). They made Twilight dolls and I guess they are hoping that these will do as well. Only time will tell if this series blows up like Twilight did.

I loved the books and think the books are definitely okay for 12 & up. I mean look at Lord of the Flies – that was required reading in my 6th grade advanced english class and I was like 10 or 11.

As for the Barbie, my older sister still collects the special edition Barbies, so I’m seeing it more in that way than being geared at 6 year olds. I’m seeing her as a collector item not a toy toy. Plus, as I always say, if someone thinks something is ‘too mature” or “inappropriate” for their children they don’t have to buy it.

I loved the books, and think they are okay for middle/high schoolers. I think they offer a really valuable lesson about the effects of war on children. BUT, I think a Katniss Barbie doll is ridiculous — aren’t the children who play with Barbies younger than 12? And I really can’t imagine Katniss as Barbie — but maybe that’s just because I hate Barbie dolls ;-)

This is obviously meant to be a collrctor’s doll not a play doll. The nearly $30 price tag is a dead giveaway. Play Barbies are only about $10.

My son read the Hunger Games trilogy last year at age 10. His teacher allowed certain students to borrow her copy of the first book. We’ve had a few interesting conversations on post apocolytic worlds, and this year, on the power of the media since his Gr 6 teacher is trying to introduce the class to the concept of following what is going on in the outside world, and how it can affect them. Way more sophisticated than when I was in Grade 6, but the world has changed, and our children need to be able to navigate in it for themselves.
That being said, the school library did NOT put them on the shelf for fear that children who were not ready for the content would take them out. It was felt that the teachers and parents should retain control as they could judge the maturity level of each child.
